Harvest and Processing of Polygonum multiflorum

This product is derived from the dried root of the Polygonum multiflorum plant, commonly known as He Shou Wu. It is a widely used traditional Chinese medicinal herb valued for its health benefits and unique appearance. (1) **Origin**: The primary regions where this herb is cultivated include Henan, Hubei, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Jiangsu. These areas provide the ideal climate and soil conditions necessary for the growth of high-quality roots. (2) **Processing at the Place of Origin**: Harvesting typically occurs during the fall and winter months when the plant’s foliage has withered. The roots are carefully dug up, trimmed at both ends, thoroughly washed, cut into larger pieces, and then dried under controlled conditions to preserve their potency and quality. (3) **Appearance and Characteristics**: The root appears in irregular lump or spindle shapes, measuring between 6 to 15 cm in length and 4 to 12 cm in diameter. Its surface is reddish-brown with a shriveled texture, featuring shallow grooves, long lenticels, and fine root traces. The root is dense, solid, and difficult to break. When cut open, the cross-section reveals a light yellow-brown or reddish-brown color, with a powdery texture. It contains 4 to 11 circular vascular bundles arranged in a ring, creating a distinctive "brocade-like" pattern. The central wood portion is relatively large, and some specimens may show a distinct "wooden heart." The aroma is mild, while the taste is a combination of bitterness, sweetness, and astringency. For the best quality, look for roots that are large, solid, and heavy, with a reddish-brown color and a clear "cloud-like" pattern on the cross-section. Roots with a pinkish base are considered more desirable and of higher quality.
