Shanghai: High food prices

In the National Day holiday just past, although Shanghai's various vegetable wholesale markets have sufficient sources of supply, people still feel that the retail market has higher vegetable prices. The price of Shanghai's main and non-staple foods will gradually increase each year in September. This year, due to the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday and the “Eleventh” holiday, the food price in Shanghai is high.

It is understood that during the holiday period, the daily supply of vegetables in Shanghai's vegetable wholesale market has exceeded the 10,000-ton mark and the supply is sufficient. During the National Day holiday, Shanghai supermarkets, supermarkets, food markets and other main and auxiliary food sources were abundant. The wholesale market of vegetable group companies sold 52,400 tons of vegetables for seven days, an increase of 11.8% year-on-year.

According to the fixed-point monitoring conducted by the Shanghai Municipal Commercial Committee, the retail prices of 8 types of main and non-staple foods such as rice, edible oil, pork, aquatic products, fresh vegetables, poultry, eggs, and soy products were “5 up and 3 down” year-on-year, including green leafy vegetables and rice. The retail price of eggs, aquatic products and edible oil went up, and the retail prices of pigs, soy products and light chickens fell.

According to the statistics of the wholesale market of the Shanghai Vegetable Group Corporation, the average price of the festival's vegetables was 1.95 yuan per kilogram, a year-on-year increase of 14.7%. Among them, the prices of vegetables, chicken feathers, and soybeans all increased by more than double digits.

The reporter found that the retail vegetables, vegetables from the pre-holiday 3.5 yuan 500 grams rose to 4.5 yuan / kg; Meiqin rose from 2 yuan / kg rose to 3.5 yuan / kg; bean sprouts, leeks and other high-priced dishes during the National Day more than 10 yuan / kg , 2 to 3 yuan higher than usual, and ginger, garlic and other prices have not dropped, ginger at 10 yuan / kg.

Overall, the wholesale price of vegetables in Shanghai is still relatively stable, while the price increase in the retail sector is larger than that in the wholesale market. In order to curb food prices from rising too fast, Shanghai's district governments have also stepped up price supervision at the retail sector during the holiday season to protect the public's food basket. It is understood that from October 1st to 15th, Xuhui District has implemented the bottom security guarantee for 22 vegetable farm operators in the region, and each business operator will receive a subsidy of half of the booth fees collected.
