The vegetable heart, also known as *Celtuce*, can be sown using either a broadcasting method or a more targeted approach. After sowing, it's important to cover the seeds with fine soil, ensuring that the depth is appropriate and not too deep. Once covered, you should apply decomposed manure water to help nourish the soil. This should be done at a depth of 7 to 10 cm to ensure proper root development. If you're broadcasting the seeds, it's also recommended to place Artemisia stalks on top of the soil to maintain moisture and prevent drying. Keep the soil consistently moist after planting, and once the seedlings emerge, continue to protect them from direct sunlight.
After the seedlings have emerged, it’s essential to thin them out one or two times to remove any weak or diseased plants. This helps avoid overcrowding and ensures that only the strongest seedlings grow. When the seedlings become larger, use scissors to carefully cut the stems rather than pulling them up, which can damage the roots and hinder growth.
During the seedling stage, water the plants 2 to 3 times, or consider applying a diluted chemical fertilizer if needed. Be careful not to overwater; the surface of the soil should never appear white, as this can lead to leggy and weak growth. Each watering session should be thorough, allowing the water to penetrate deep into the soil so the roots can absorb it effectively. The soil should remain consistently moist but not soggy.
To promote strong and healthy seedlings, it's beneficial to apply a root stimulant after the emergence of the first leaves. You can use either pre-grown seedlings or freshly sown ones. Mix the root stimulant in a ratio of 1:10 to 1:20 in 50 kg of nutrient-rich soil, or evenly distribute it across a 4-5 square meter seedbed. This will encourage faster germination, uniform emergence, and stronger, healthier seedlings without the risk of weak or stunted growth.
