German scientists have developed a genetically modified corn that can resist destructive rootworm pests by releasing a chemical signal that attracts nematodes, which are the natural enemies of beetle larvae. When many plants are attacked by insects, they naturally release volatile chemicals and help attract insects that can attack intruders. However, after many years of selection of fast and robust varieties, coupled with increased use of pesticides, crops seem to have lost this ability. The researchers inserted a synthetic gene from oregano (E)-β-caryophyllene (EβC, a chemical that attracts nematodes) into a corn variety, which allowed it to restore this protection .

This kind of transgenic maize is next to corn that does not release the chemical, and then puts a large amount of beetle larva into these crops. When the researchers released the nematode to the experimental field, the root damage suffered by this transgenic plant was significantly reduced and was 60% less than that of the adult beetle that did not release the chemical. Researchers suggest that applying this ability to commodity crops and manipulating the volatile emissions of plants can improve their natural defenses, which may help scientists discover and respond to ecologically sound strategies for pests.
