June Snow White Horse Spring Flowers

Chinese name: June snow

Names: Named after the summer flowers that resemble white snow.

Alias: White Horse, Spring Flowers

Family: Genus Rubiaceae

Origin: Found in various provinces south of the Yangtze River Basin in China

Morphological characteristics:

Evergreen branchlets with small, opposite, elliptical leaves that are slightly leathery and pointed at the tip. The leaves often cluster on the upper branches, and the stipules are membranous with a wide base and bristles on top.

The small white flowers look like snow and bloom in June. They come in single or double petal varieties. Some species have white-edged flowers, while others may be reddish or rough. It is best to propagate them in June or July for better survival rates, making it a popular choice among gardeners.

Habits:

June Snow is shade-tolerant, cold-resistant, and easy to grow. It thrives in well-drained soil, requires minimal fertilizer, and is resistant to pests and diseases. It is an excellent choice for hedges, topiaries, and bonsai.

When grown as a bonsai, June Snow can remain vibrant year-round if kept moist. It prefers partial shade, avoids direct sunlight, and can thrive indoors in soft soil. Its fine leaves, dense branches, thick trunk, and visible roots make it one of the best bonsai materials.

The flexible branches allow for various styles such as straight-trunk, twisted, or cliff-like forms. If placed in a tall pot, it can be trained into a hanging style. Cliff types include semi-hanging, fully-hanging, and small overhanging, depending on the slope.

Cultivation: June Snow prefers fertile sandy loam soil. It should be moved to a greenhouse in mid-October, with temperatures maintained between 10–15°C. Watering once a week is sufficient, and shade should be removed in late April.

Fertilization is not required heavily—apply a diluted liquid fertilizer monthly. Keep the soil consistently moist for optimal growth.

As a subtropical plant, it dislikes strong sunlight and needs 50%–70% shade during summer. In southern regions, it can be left outdoors in winter, but in the north, it should be brought indoors and kept at 5–12°C.

Use:

With its elegant form, lush foliage, and refined beauty, June Snow is a striking ornamental plant used in landscaping and bonsai. It is one of the five famous trees in Lingnan bonsai and is known as "stump bonsai." It gained international recognition after China joined the WTO and became a popular export to the U.S.

Colorful June Snow

â–¡ Li Jianmin

I've never heard of a bonsai called "snow" before, and the name "June Snow" seemed strange and hard to explain. This plant, which I call "June Snow," is a leafy bonsai that caught my attention when I visited many bonsai exhibitions. I thought it would be a unique addition to my office, offering a touch of elegance and mystery.

Although it costs around 300 yuan, I felt it was worth it. Placing a bonsai in the corner of the office added life to what otherwise felt dull. While some people choose large trees or bamboo for their offices, I preferred something different. This "June Snow" had a quiet, intellectual charm that set it apart. Everyone who came to my office commented on how beautiful it looked.

The "June Snow" stands about 50 centimeters high, with three layers of leaves revealing the exposed roots. It resembles clouds, and I found it more natural than many other bonsais I’ve seen. Most bonsais have hidden trunks or overly artificial shapes, but this one was balanced, with visible roots, clear stems, and a sense of both age and vitality.

The tree has dozens of unusual roots, with three main trunks that are white and blue, arranged in staggered layers. The leaves look like green jade earrings, and when the wind blows, they flutter gently. Tiny white flowers appear among the leaves, adding a soft touch of color.

This "June Snow" isn’t just a plant—it’s a masterpiece. It combines ancient and modern elements, with a bark that resembles birch or oak, smooth yet aged. Its slender, delicate form makes it seem both fragile and strong. I was truly amazed by its beauty and artistic expression.

I first watered it at the end of the lunar calendar, bringing it from the flower market to my office. I didn’t understand the name "June Snow" at first. Was it referring to the blooming period or the fruit? After observing it closely, I realized it doesn’t bear fruit, only small white flowers. But when I sprayed it with water, the effect was magical. The mist created a snowy appearance, with tiny droplets resembling snowflakes. That’s when I understood why it’s called "June Snow"—it's not about the season, but the visual effect.

I’m confident that the name comes from poetic inspiration rather than botany. It’s a perfect blend of nature and art. Now, whenever I spray the bonsai, I feel a sense of joy and connection. The "snow" falls gently, and the plant remains bright and green. It’s not just a plant—it’s a living piece of poetry.

"Snow in June" — a symbol of unexpected beauty, where feelings meet the falling of snow, and colors come alive.
