In winter, intercropping during the "light period" is an effective way to maximize land use. For cruciferous crops, such as Chinese cabbage, it can be transplanted from a nursery or directly sown, yielding over 2,500 kg per mu. Mustard, kohlrabi, and cabbage are usually sown in October, transplanted in November, and harvested in April of the following year, with similar yields. Lettuce should be planted early using fast-maturing varieties for earlier harvests.
Legumes like early broad beans are sown in October and harvested in April, while early peas can also be grown. Pea heads can be sold in morning markets, and green pea pods can be collected later in the season.
Forage crops such as Rumex, alfalfa, and ryegrass typically produce more than 3,000 kg of fresh grass per mu, making them excellent choices for livestock feed.
During the summer "casual period," intercropping with solanaceous crops like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and potatoes is common. These crops are usually started under plastic film before April and transplanted into mulberry fields in mid to late April. Cucurbitaceae, including watermelons and melons, are also sown with good seedlings in April and transplanted similarly. Umbelliferous crops like celery are first raised as strong seedlings before being transplanted.
In newly expanded mulberry gardens, intercropping during the "un-planted period" is encouraged. Summer intercropping options include oilseed crops like soybeans, peanuts, and sesame; solanaceous crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers; cucurbitaceae like watermelons and wax gourds; and cruciferous crops like Xiayang No. 4 Chinese cabbage. In winter, legumes like early broad beans and peas, along with forages such as alfalfa, ryegrass, and Rumex, are ideal choices.
Young mulberry gardens can support intercropping throughout the year. However, it's important that all intercropping is done with the mulberry tree as the main crop. High-stalk or vine crops that could negatively affect the mulberry trees should be avoided. This approach ensures sustainable farming and maximizes productivity without compromising the health of the mulberry plants.
