Small size fish species intensified cultivation in late autumn

Whether it's a large area of ponds, banks, rice fields, or intensive fish farming systems, the size and physical condition of fish species directly influence the production of adult fish in the following year. Therefore, it's essential to screen, classify, and implement targeted cultivation strategies during the late autumn season to ensure high-quality adult fish output. The following are some effective post-autumn rearing techniques for small-sized fish species. First, select suitable fish species and perform grading and dilution. Fish of different sizes should be separated based on their growth stage. Fish measuring between 16.5 cm and 23 cm are ideal for being placed into ponds designated for adult fish production. Meanwhile, smaller fish—such as those measuring 6.6 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm—should be diluted and intensively raised in separate areas. In ponds with a depth of 1.5 meters, a stocking density of 3,000 to 6,000 fish per 667 square meters is recommended. Second, ensure sufficient feed and careful management. In addition to water fertilization and feeding to maintain good water quality, fish ponds that mainly raise squid or similar species should also receive timely and appropriate amounts of concentrated feed. Typically, feeding occurs around 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. For every 1,000 fish, about 0.3 to 0.5 kg of food such as rice noodles, distiller’s grains, vegetable oil cakes, soybean cakes, or cottonseed cakes is provided. For grass carp-based ponds, it's important to first feed them with green materials like duckweed, aquatic plants, or dry grass, followed by fine feed to prevent competition for food. If possible, using artificial floating pellets or expanded feed is highly recommended for better digestion and growth. Third, enhance daily management and focus on disease prevention. During the intensive rearing period, it's crucial to regularly inspect the ponds, monitor fish behavior, and check water conditions. Freshwater should be added or replaced every 7 to 10 days, with each addition ranging from 10 to 20 cm. In grass carp ponds, maintaining clean water is vital—removing debris and regularly cleaning the feeding area is necessary. Every two weeks, the feeding table should be disinfected with bleach, and chemicals like bleach or copper sulfate should be used around the feeding area to prevent disease outbreaks. Any sick or dead fish must be removed immediately, examined, and treated to avoid spreading illness and ensure a successful harvest.
