Small size fish species intensified cultivation in late autumn

Whether it's a large area of ponds, riverbanks, rice fields, or intensive fish farming systems, the size and physical condition of fish species directly impact the yield of adult fish in the following year. Therefore, it is essential to screen, classify, and implement targeted cultivation practices during the late autumn season to ensure optimal production of marketable adult fish. Below are some effective post-autumn rearing methods for small-scale fish species. First, select and appropriately dilute the fish for grading. Fish should be carefully sorted based on their size and species. Fish measuring between 16.5 cm and 23 cm are suitable for being raised in ponds designated for adult fish production. Meanwhile, smaller fish—such as those at 6.6 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm—are best kept in separate, diluted environments for intensive growth. In ponds with a depth of 1.5 meters, stocking density should be maintained between 3,000 to 6,000 fish per 667 square meters to avoid overcrowding and promote healthy development. Second, ensure sufficient feed and provide careful attention. Along with water fertilization and maintaining good water quality, it's important to supply concentrated feed to the fish. For ponds mainly stocked with carp and other similar species, feeding should be done at regular intervals—typically around 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Each 1,000 fish should receive about 0.3 to 0.5 kg of food, which can include rice noodles, distiller’s grains, vegetable oil cakes, soybean cakes, and cottonseed cakes. For grass carp-based ponds, it's crucial to provide green vegetation such as duckweed, aquatic plants, and dried grass, followed by fine feed to prevent competition for resources. When possible, using artificial floating pellets or extruded feed is highly recommended, as they offer better nutrition and reduce waste. Third, enhance management and focus on disease prevention. During the intensive rearing period, daily pond inspections are necessary to monitor fish behavior, feeding patterns, and water conditions. Freshwater should be added or replaced every 7 to 10 days, with each change amounting to 10 to 20 cm. For grass carp ponds, maintaining clean water is critical—removing debris regularly and cleaning the feeding platforms. Every two weeks, the feeding tables should be disinfected with bleach, and disinfectants like bleach and copper sulfate should be used periodically around the feeding areas to prevent disease outbreaks. Any sick or dead fish must be removed immediately, examined, and treated promptly to ensure a successful harvest.
