August is a critical time for citrus fruit development, as it marks the period of autumn shoot growth and fruit enlargement. To avoid the intense heat of the midday sun, it's best to schedule field activities during early morning or late afternoon for more effective management.
(1) Crown Management
During this time, it's important to carefully manage the tree canopy, especially for early-maturing varieties. Remove diseased, misshapen, cracked, or oversized/undersized fruits to ensure uniform size, appearance, and quality. Fruit quality is closely related to stem thickness—fruits with thin, drooping stems tend to have better texture and flavor, while those with thick, upright stems may become too large or rough-skinned, affecting overall quality. To support fruit development, apply a mixture of Zhuang Tiling and potassium dihydrogen phosphate, along with phosphorus-rich fertilizers, to enhance nutrient absorption and improve fruit quality. Additionally, thinning out some fruits can help balance the tree’s energy, promoting better flowering for the next season. Using products like Kaowang 2 (Southern variety) can also assist in regulating the tree’s nutrient distribution, reducing the risk of excessive fruiting and encouraging proper flower bud formation.
(2) Soil, Fertilizer, and Water Management
Prolonged drought can severely impact citrus production. Excessive dryness not only hinders fruit growth but also increases acidity and causes leaf drop, weakening the tree. If leaves wilt and don’t recover by morning, irrigation should be done promptly, preferably in the early morning or late evening. Each irrigation should provide about 5–10 mm of water to support fruit expansion and healthy growth. In young orchards with low canopy cover, consider planting green manure between trees, using mulch or shade nets, and implementing shallow ditch irrigation to maintain soil moisture. For coastal citrus farms, staying updated on typhoon forecasts is essential to prepare for strong winds and heavy rain, minimizing potential damage.
