Autumn marks the beginning of the first production phase for reserve hens, making it a critical period for their development and future egg-laying performance. The feeding and management practices during this time directly impact the economic returns of the poultry operation. To ensure optimal laying hen performance, several key technical management practices should be carefully implemented.
One important step is to transition the feed gradually. At 20 weeks of age, hens should be switched to pre-lay feed containing 1% calcium and 16.5% crude protein. As the egg production rate increases to between 2% and 6%, the calcium content should be raised to 3.4%–3.5%, and the protein level should reach 18%. This gradual adjustment helps support the hen’s reproductive system and ensures they are ready for peak egg production.
Temperature control is also crucial. Laying hens perform best in an environment around 18°C. Extreme temperatures—either too hot or too cold—can increase energy demands and reduce feed intake. When temperatures drop below 13°C, it can negatively affect growth and egg production. In hot autumn conditions, hens may eat less, so it's essential to adjust the diet by increasing protein levels to support reproductive development and prevent delays in sexual maturity.
Humidity and ventilation must be properly managed as well. The ideal relative humidity in the chicken house is between 55% and 65%. After four weeks of age, this can be reduced slightly to around 50%. High humidity can cause hens to lose appetite and delay sexual maturity. Poor ventilation leads to higher levels of harmful gases, increased humidity, and lower oxygen levels, which can stunt growth and delay the onset of egg production.
Lastly, providing sufficient clean drinking water is vital. Young hens require about 100 grams of water per day. Water supply should be constant and fresh, ideally using a flowing water system. It's also beneficial to offer 2–3 diluted brine solutions weekly to help maintain electrolyte balance and support overall health.
By focusing on these management practices, poultry farmers can significantly improve the health, growth, and productivity of their reserve hens, setting the stage for a successful laying cycle.
