First, the raw materials required include aluminum scraps, soda ash (sodium carbonate), lime powder (calcium oxide), copper, and pressure gauges. These are essential components for the hydrogen gas generation process.
Second, the production of the gas cylinder:
The equipment used to produce hydrogen gas is known as a gas cylinder. It's a cylindrical iron container with a diameter of 20 cm and a height of 40 cm. The wall thickness is 3 mm, and the total volume is approximately 12 liters. To construct it, take a steel plate that is 1 meter long, 20 cm wide, and 2-3 mm thick—this can be cut into six cylinders of the desired size. Once cut, the pieces are welded together to form a closed barrel. A 3 cm diameter hole is then drilled in the middle of the top surface. An iron pipe of 3 cm in both length and diameter is welded into this hole to create the gas outlet.
Next, make a rubber stopper that fits snugly into the air outlet. The stopper should be 3 cm in both length and diameter. Drill two small holes in the rubber plug—one for the pressure gauge connector and another for the outlet pipe.
The outlet pipe must be connected to an air valve, which can be replaced by a switch from a sprayer boom. The maximum charge capacity of the gas cylinder is 250 grams of aluminum scraps, 540 grams of soda ash, 418 grams of lime powder, and 5 liters of water. Under normal temperature and pressure, this mixture can generate up to 340 liters of hydrogen gas. When the internal pressure reaches 0.4 kg/cm² on the pressure gauge, the cylinder is ready to fill a balloon.
Third, the gas operation:
Start by removing the rubber stopper and adding the aluminum, soda ash, and lime powder in the correct proportions. Then add water and reseal the cylinder with the rubber stopper. As the reaction takes place, hydrogen gas is produced, pushing the air out of the upper part of the cylinder.
After estimating the air exhaust, close the rubber stopper and turn off the hydrogen outlet valve. Wait until the pressure gauge reads 0.4 kg/cm², at which point the gas is ready for use.
If the cylinder becomes too hot during the reaction, it can be cooled by placing it in an iron drum filled with cold water. This helps slow down the reaction and prevents the water from boiling, which could reduce the purity of the hydrogen. It’s important to note that when using the cylinder for the first time or if it's cold, you should use hot water. After the initial reaction, the cylinder will naturally generate heat, so only cold water needs to be added for subsequent uses.
