In spring, it's a crucial time for meat pigeons to lay eggs, hatch them, and raise their young. To improve the survival rate of the chicks, proper breeding and management are essential. During the incubation period, the eggs should be carefully monitored and turned twice—once after 4 to 7 days, and again after 10 to 13 days. A clean and comfortable nest is important to encourage the parents to lay a second batch of eggs. Once the chicks hatch, they must be protected from being stepped on or injured by the parent pigeons.
Feeding should be done in a scientific manner to meet the nutritional needs of the breeding pigeons. Their diet should be well-balanced, fresh, and varied, with high palatability. A recommended formula includes 50% corn, 15% brown rice, 10% wheat, 20% sorghum, and 5% rapeseed. They should be fed twice daily, and clean drinking water and health sand must always be available. Maintaining hygiene in feeding areas is also key to preventing disease.
Moisture control is vital as pigeons prefer dry environments. The loft should be kept dry by regularly sweeping the floor and sprinkling lime to absorb excess humidity. A layer of clean sand should be placed in the exercise area. Ventilation is important too—open doors and windows regularly to allow air circulation and reduce dampness. Any leaks in the loft should be repaired immediately to prevent moisture buildup.
Keeping the loft warm is essential, especially during the first week of the chicks' life. If the temperature drops too low, it can lead to colds and other illnesses. In spring, temperatures can fluctuate rapidly, so it's important to monitor weather changes. Before a cold front arrives, close the windows and doors to maintain warmth inside the loft.
Maintaining cleanliness is critical for disease prevention. The coop should be swept twice daily and thoroughly cleaned once a week. Disinfection with a 5% solution of Susu water or 10-20% lime milk should be done monthly. All areas, including feeders, water bowls, and tools, must be kept clean. Implementing a strict biosecurity system is necessary. Regular observation of the pigeons helps detect any signs of illness early, allowing for quick isolation and treatment of affected birds.
