The Meizhou Daily (Reporter Ye Shixin, Chen Chaohua and Li Qizhi) recently visited Zeng Yongsheng's pig farm in Maoyuan Village, Fanzhai Town, Fengshun County. The reporter observed pigs relaxing in a large barn covered with thick sawdust and straw. Unlike traditional farms, there were no workers using hoses to clean the pens, and the usual smell of manure was absent. Luo Meihong, director of the Fengshun County Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau, explained that this is a new zero-emission ecological farming method developed and promoted by local departments, showing promising results.
This technique involves adding microbial strains to decompose pig waste in bedding made of straw and sawdust. As a result, there's no need for water flushing, no pollution, and the bedding can be used for three years before being turned into high-quality organic fertilizer. In May this year, Meizhou City issued guidelines supporting "zero-discharge ecological pig farming," allocating one million yuan annually for such technology. Both city and county animal husbandry departments are actively promoting this model, aiming for over 70% of pig farms in Fengshun to adopt it within five years.
Zeng Yongsheng, a 50-year-old farmer, shared his experience. His family started raising pigs using this method last October, building a 500-head facility. By February this year, they sold their first batch of 540 pigs, achieving a feed-to-meat ratio of 2.3:1—better than the 2.5–2.8:1 seen in traditional methods. Each pig generated about 140 yuan in profit. He noted that managing the farm now only requires two people, compared to the 200 pigs that could be handled with a larger workforce using traditional methods.
Luo Meihong added that traditional pig farming uses around 65 cubic meters of water daily, making water use and pollution major challenges. This new system saves water, energy, and labor, while also improving pig health through the use of yeast. Pigs raised this way rarely need antibiotics, resulting in better meat quality. The method is proving to be both efficient and environmentally friendly.
Meizhou's eco-farming initiatives have shown significant progress, promoting sustainable livestock development. According to local data, as of June, the city had 1,885,500 live pigs, totaling 12.1393 million heads. Pork production reached 151,700 tons, an increase of nearly 10% from the previous year. This success highlights the potential of zero-emission farming in transforming the industry while protecting the environment.
