It boasts exceptional immunity and offers significant medicinal benefits—over ten times more valuable than wild quail. While wild quail typically sells for just 0.5 to 1 yuan per barrel, the Chinese red-headed giant oyster commands a much higher price, ranging from 6 to 8 yuan per barrel. Its breeding process is straightforward, requiring minimal management and offering high efficiency in feeding.
For breeding, the oysters can be raised in indoor three-dimensional boxes with a minimum size of 1.2 square meters or in underground pools. The walls should be made of wood or cement, at least 0.5 meters high, and lined with smooth plastic film or glass veneer. The bottom should have at least 10 cm of loose soil or sand, with multiple layers of tiles placed on top to create a stable environment. Outdoor setups require similar structures but must include shelter to protect against sun, rain, and pests. Feeding trays are usually large porcelain plates or clean rectangular plastic trays, with small plates used for drinking. Each box should have more than five drinking dishes distributed throughout. All tools should be cleaned daily and disinfected weekly using potassium permanganate. Additional tools like thermometers, moisture meters, watering cans, brushes, and catching chopsticks are also essential for maintaining a healthy environment.
Feeding is done regularly and in controlled portions. The main diet consists of mealworms, with occasional fresh fish or shrimp provided once every 15–20 days. Food should be spread evenly across the terrarium, and no water should be sprayed indoors before meals. Water should be provided in shallow, flat dishes (about 1–1.5 cm deep), and fresh cold water should be available daily. Maintaining cleanliness is crucial to prevent flies and ensure good air quality. The ideal temperature range is 20–25°C. If it gets too hot, misting the room is recommended, but electric fans or air conditioners should be avoided. In colder months, heating systems can be used to keep the environment warm without hibernation.
Health monitoring is important. Any signs of illness, such as swelling, lethargy, or abnormal behavior, should prompt immediate isolation. Treatments may include oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, and alcohol-based cleaning. Antennae should be treated with antibiotics and wiped with alcohol to prevent infections.
To prevent pests and diseases like melasma, a mixture of 0.6g of mother feed, 0.25g of oxytetracycline, and 0.25g of chloramphenicol can be added to the feedworms for seven days. Severe cases should be isolated. Other treatments like bacteriocin or amphotericin can also be used. For gastroenteritis, sulfamethoxazole or chloramphenicol can be mixed into the feed. Shelling disease requires careful humidity control and the addition of oxytetracycline, calcium, and maternal feed to the diet every ten days.
Breeding typically occurs between March and June, with eggs laid between May and August. Each spawning session produces around 50–60 eggs, which hatch after approximately 20 days. After 45 days, the young leave the mother to live independently. During incubation, a quiet, humid environment with temperatures between 12–15°C is ideal. As they grow, the oysters should be fed cooked egg yolk and monitored for health. Only purebred Chinese red-headed giant oysters should be selected as seedlings to ensure quality and stability.
