Baby's First Diaper
Yesterday, while sorting through some old baby gear in the attic, I stumbled upon a brand-new diaper. It was wedged between the pack-and-play instructions and a couple of other things I couldn't fit into the travel bag—like the monkey mobile and a few tiny blankets. I ended up stuffing everything I could into the bag, and those leftover items got squished between the Velcro straps. Honestly, it wasn’t the unused diaper that made me emotional, but there I was, holding this miniature piece of baby gear, and I couldn’t help but tear up. I showed it to anyone who’d look, and let me tell you, the reactions were mixed. The women oohed and awwed, their pity tinged with understanding. The guys? They just gave me that crooked half-smile, probably wondering if I was handling this whole parenting thing okay. Spoiler alert: I'm fine, but it’s the little moments that sneak up on you.

The transformation of my tiny bundle of joy into this independent little human has been surreal. There was a time when I was the only source of nutrition, cradling him close as he drifted off to sleep against my chest. His little hands would grip mine tightly, and those moments felt like magic. Now, he’s all grown up, grabbing forks and feeding himself. Watching him stab at his food with that silver fork and then proudly shove it into his mouth—it’s wild. And yes, I might have shed another tear. It’s not sadness, though. It’s awe, and maybe a touch of nostalgia for those earlier days.

Parenting is full of these bittersweet moments, isn’t it? One day you’re changing diapers, and the next, you’re watching them conquer the world with a plastic fork. Life moves fast, doesn’t it? But for now, I’ll savor every bite, every giggle, and every tiny triumph. Because before I know it, he’ll be too big to fit on my lap, and I’ll be the one standing awkwardly smiling, trying to figure out what comes next.
