These issues can delay mushroom formation, reduce overall yield, and in severe cases, prevent mushrooms from forming altogether. To address this problem, scraping the surface of the material proves to be an effective solution, significantly improving production efficiency.
The process of peeling involves removing a layer of aged mycelium that has developed on the surface, especially where there is excessive browning or bacterial buildup. For areas that are slightly compacted but still thick, making numerous small grooves across the surface using a wire tool can help expose the underlying mycelium. In trampoline cultivation, a bamboo broom can be used to sweep back and forth over the bed, gently scratching away the old mycelium and revealing fresh hyphae beneath. Additionally, for bag cultures, scraping off the old mycelium at both ends can improve growth conditions.
Scraping the surface has a strong stimulatory effect on the formation of primordia and promotes healthier mycelial growth. Typically, new mushroom buds will appear within 7 to 10 days after the procedure. However, it's important to remove the scraped-off mycelium and bacteria immediately to avoid contamination. The newly exposed surface should also be leveled to ensure uniform mushroom development and a neater appearance. Furthermore, it's recommended not to spray water until the mycelium has fully recovered and started growing again. This careful management helps maintain optimal conditions for the next flush of mushrooms.
