In the summer, it's essential to adjust pig feeding practices to help them stay cool and healthy. Start by incorporating more cleansing and purging feeds into their diet. Options like wheat bran, soybean meal, peanut cake, detoxified feed additives, artificial salt, pumpkin, and other similar ingredients can be used based on availability. However, avoid feeding hot feeds such as sorghum, melon, cotton stalks, and distillers' grains in large quantities.
During the hot season, pigs need more clean water, especially nursing sows and piglets. It’s best to feed them smaller, more frequent meals. Ensure that water basins or troughs are always available in the pen for constant access. In extreme heat, consider digging a small pit in the pigsty and filling it with cool well water so pigs can wallow in it. However, never pour the cool water directly on the animals.
To keep the pigpen free from pests, take measures to repel mosquitoes and flies, especially at night. You can burn mosquito coils or hang gauze-wrapped trichlorfon to prevent bites. Additionally, administer a proper dose of oxytetracycline periodically and maintain cleanliness by regularly washing feeding tools and the pigsty to prevent disease spread.
At night, when temperatures drop, pigs tend to be more active and eat. Before bedtime, make sure there is enough food available in the pen. After eating, pigs can sleep up to 18 hours a day, which supports weight gain. To accelerate growth during the summer, you can feed them three times at night—around 7 PM, 11 PM, and 4 AM. During the day, two feedings are recommended: at 10 AM and 2 PM. Also, offer a half-day saline solution (0.5%) to help maintain hydration.
Feeding amounts vary depending on the pig's weight. For pigs under 35 kg, provide 2 kg of feed per day without saltwater. When they weigh between 35-60 kg, increase the feed to 2.75 kg daily and add 5 kg of saltwater. Once they exceed 60 kg, feed 3.5 kg per day along with 7.5 kg of saltwater. Adjusting the diet in this way helps ensure optimal health and growth during the summer months.
