Special care recommended: Yila rabbit (Figure)

The Yila rabbit is a hybrid breed developed by the French European Rabbit Industry Corporation in the late 1970s. It was created through extensive crossbreeding and testing of nine original varieties, resulting in four distinct lines—A, B, C, and D. Each line has its own unique characteristics and genetic advantages. Thanks to the benefits of hybrid vigor, Yila rabbits are known for their stable genetics, rapid growth, high feed efficiency, strong disease resistance, large litter sizes, and superior meat quality. Adult Yila rabbits typically weigh around 5.0 kg, with a daily weight gain of 50 grams. They give birth to an average of 8.35 kits per litter, with a fertility rate of 76% and a weaning mortality rate of 10.31%. The feed conversion ratio is 3.0:1, making them highly efficient in terms of resource use. At just 75 days old, Yila rabbits can reach 2.5 kg, with a net meat yield of 1.5 kg. Compared to other breeds, Yila rabbits have a higher meat yield—around 58-60%, which is 8-10% higher than that of standard rabbits. Their meat is not only tender but also rich in lecithin, protein, and low in fat, often called "beauty food" due to its health benefits. In addition to being used in various culinary dishes, Yila rabbits are primarily sold as white rabbit meat. The majority of the production is exported to Europe, followed by Russia. The European market has a large consumer base, and the annual export volume reaches about 1,000 tons. Yila rabbits are also highly productive in terms of reproduction. While regular rabbits usually have 6 litters per year, Yila rabbits can have 8-9, with some reaching up to 11-12 litters. Their survival rate is generally above 95%. Yila rabbits grow quickly, reaching 2.5 kg at 75 days and averaging 4.5 kg as adults. They thrive in temperatures around 28°C with humidity levels between 40% and 70%. However, high ammonia levels in the environment can lead to respiratory issues like rhinitis, so proper ventilation is essential. Yila rabbits are well-suited for small-scale or garden-style farming. A typical group consists of one male and four females, producing around 240 offspring annually. At a market price of 10 yuan per kilogram, each group can generate a gross income of 5,000 yuan per year, with a 50% profit margin. This makes it a highly profitable venture for farmers. According to Wang Yongxiang, director of the China Association of Agricultural Technology and Rabbit Industry, the domestic market price for rabbit meat ranges from 14 to 16 yuan per kilogram, while in coastal areas, it can go up to 24-26 yuan. In 2006, China’s rabbit meat exports were expected to reach around 10,000 tons, with an export price of $2.4 per kilogram. During a recent visit to a breeding facility in Shandong, reporters observed the impressive size and productivity of Yila rabbits. One 75-day-old rabbit weighed over 5 pounds, compared to a regular rabbit that weighed around 3.5 pounds. When it came to meat yield, the Yila rabbit had a net meat weight of 1.5 kg, significantly higher than the 1.15 kg from a regular rabbit. Chefs praised the tenderness and flavor of Yila rabbit meat, using it in dishes such as Oasis Roasted Rabbit, which sells for over 200 yuan per serving. Farmers like Master Wang Haitao have seen great success raising Yila rabbits, expanding from just two groups to 50 in just two years. With high profits and growing international demand, the Yila rabbit breed continues to be a popular choice for both commercial and small-scale breeders.
