Compost is not only an effective way to recycle organic waste but also a great soil medium for growing potted plants. It is made from various organic materials such as dry branches, leaves, grass, fruit peels, animal manure, hair, bones, and internal organs. These are combined with old potting soil, furnace ash, and garden soil, and then mixed with a small amount of compost starter to speed up the fermentation process. Within just one or two days, the mixture can be fully fermented and ready for use.
When making compost, it's important to avoid over-wetting the pile. This allows aerobic bacteria to thrive, breaking down the organic matter efficiently and producing beneficial nutrients like nitrates and sulfides. However, if the mixture becomes too wet, anaerobic bacteria may take over, causing foul smells and converting the organic material into harmful gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. These gases escape into the air, reducing the overall quality of the compost.
To improve drainage and maintain good aeration, it’s recommended to mix the compost with half sand. This combination creates a nutrient-rich, well-draining soil that’s ideal for many plants. For example, when used in combination with peat soil, compost works wonders for orchids, lotus flowers, azaleas, Clivia, and jasmine. These plants benefit greatly from the balanced nutrition and improved soil structure provided by the compost blend.
