Orchard turtle tips

To enhance the economic returns per unit area, raising turtles in orchards has become a popular and sustainable practice. This method not only helps control pests naturally but also increases income through turtle farming. Below are some key experiences and practices for successful turtle cultivation in orchards. First, setting up appropriate breeding facilities is crucial. A low wall should be constructed around the orchard to prevent turtles from escaping. The base of the wall should extend about 20 centimeters underground, and the height above ground should be around 60 centimeters, with rounded corners to reduce the chance of escape. In addition, small shelters can be built in the center or corners of the orchard based on the number of turtles. These shelters serve as safe spaces during pesticide spraying, allowing turtles to be temporarily moved indoors. After 1–3 days, they can be released back into the orchard. Using environmentally friendly pesticides can further minimize risks. During winter, turtles can be housed indoors with dry grass for insulation, and water should be sprinkled occasionally to maintain humidity. In colder regions, plastic films or basements can provide additional protection. Shade structures should also be installed to help turtles cool down during hot summer months. Second, selecting the right turtle species is essential. Drought-resistant varieties such as the Chinese softshell turtle, red-eared slider, and box turtle are ideal choices due to their ability to survive without water for extended periods. While semi-aquatic species like colorful turtles can also be raised, it's important to create small pools or ditches for bathing and hydration. Stocking density should remain low—approximately 200–300 turtles per 667 square meters. This ensures enough space for movement and reduces stress. Third, feeding strategies should be adjusted according to the season and insect availability. In the evening, hanging lights can attract insects, which then serve as natural food for the turtles. This method effectively reduces pest populations, lowers pesticide use, and cuts feed costs by 30% to 50%. Insects are rich in protein, making them an excellent natural diet. On rainy days or during early spring and winter, when insect numbers are low, artificial feed can be provided at about 3%–4% of the turtle’s body weight. During sunny summer days, more insects are attracted, so artificial feed can be reduced to 1%–3%, depending on the day’s catch. Finally, disease prevention is important. Although turtles in orchards rarely get sick, regular hygiene is necessary. Bathing turtles once a month with a diluted bleach solution (1:2000) helps keep them clean. Gastrointestinal issues may occur in summer and autumn, which can be treated with norfloxacin. Additionally, predators such as rats, weasels, snakes, and birds of prey should be controlled to protect the turtle population. By combining these practices, orchard owners can successfully raise turtles while improving both ecological balance and financial returns.
