This work typically takes place between November and December.
(1) **Qingyuan Maintenance**: It's essential to promptly burn any pruned branches, leaves, and insects that have been removed during the winter. This helps eliminate overwintering sites for pests and diseases, reducing their chances of survival through the cold season.
(2) **Spraying Lime Sulfur Mixture**: Apply a 1-1.5 degree lime sulfur solution to the branches and leaves, repeating the process after about 10 days. This helps kill larvae, mites, and overwintering eggs, providing effective protection for the coming growing season.
(3) **Treating Gum Exudation and Root Rot**: Carefully scrape away any gummy exudates or affected areas on the trunk. This helps prevent the spread of fungal infections and improves tree health.
(4) **Trunk Whitewashing**: Begin by using a knife to remove any insects or lesions on the bark. Then apply a whitewashing agent to protect the trunk from temperature fluctuations and pests. The whitewash mixture consists of 5 kg of slaked lime, 1 kg of fine sulfur powder, 0.1 kg of salt, 0.1 kg of copper oxychloride, and 3 liters of water. This not only protects the tree but also helps in identifying any damage or infestation early.
By following these steps, growers can ensure that their grapefruit trees remain healthy and strong, setting the stage for a successful harvest in the next season. These practices are time-tested and widely used in traditional agriculture, offering both practical and sustainable benefits.
