Wheat rust prevention and control technology

Wheat rust includes three types: leaf rust, stem rust, and stripe rust. Among them, stripe rust is the most dangerous and causes the greatest damage. The occurrence of stripe rust is more likely under certain environmental conditions—particularly when winter temperatures are higher than usual, spring rainfall (from March to April) is abundant, and field humidity remains high. These factors create a favorable environment for the development and spread of rust. First, selecting resistant wheat varieties is the most economical and effective way to prevent rust. It's also a long-term solution. However, since the replacement of resistant varieties takes time, it's advisable to combine this practice with foliar sprays. At the jointing stage and the booting stage of wheat growth, applying Shuofeng 481 or high-energy potassium can enhance the plant’s resistance to disease, improve yield, and increase grain weight. Second, the scientific use of chemical agents is essential. Spraying 3–4 times during the jointing and booting stages helps to block the formation of infection centers and prevent the spread of the disease. Commonly used agents include 25% Puxing wettable powder or other effective fungicides. In areas where the disease is severe, a unified prevention strategy should be adopted to reduce pathogen levels in the field and control outbreaks. Fungicides such as Pudan or enemy force not only prevent rust but also help manage powdery mildew, sheath blight, and head blight. If head blight is particularly severe, combining iodine with thiophanate-methyl may provide better results. In addition, regular field monitoring and early intervention are crucial. Farmers should pay close attention to weather conditions and crop health to detect signs of rust early. By combining genetic resistance, proper agronomic practices, and timely chemical treatments, farmers can significantly reduce the impact of wheat rust and ensure better harvests.
