Anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) have been found to play a potential role in the immune mechanisms underlying Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). HFRS is a serious infectious disease caused by various hantaviruses, and it primarily affects the kidneys, leading to significant clinical complications. A study published in the Chinese Journal of Infectious Diseases in February explored the significance of ACA testing in patients with HFRS. The research team from the Department of Nephrology at the Second Military Medical University in China conducted an analysis using ELISA to detect ACA-IgM and ACA-IgG levels in different patient groups.
The study included 54 HFRS patients, 52 with lupus nephritis, 69 children with nephrotic syndrome, and 50 healthy controls. The results showed that none of the control group tested positive for either ACA-IgM or ACA-IgG. In contrast, 85.2% of HFRS patients were positive for ACA-IgM, while 24.1% tested positive for ACA-IgG. These rates were significantly higher compared to the lupus nephritis group (25.0% for IgM and 21.2% for IgG) and the nephrotic syndrome group (13.0% for IgM and 8.7% for IgG). The difference was statistically significant, particularly for ACA-IgM, which was much higher in HFRS patients than in other groups (P < 0.01).
These findings suggest that ACA may be involved in the immune response associated with HFRS, possibly contributing to the disease's progression. The presence of these antibodies could serve as a useful biomarker for understanding the pathogenesis of HFRS and may help in developing more targeted treatment strategies. Further studies are needed to confirm the exact role of ACA in the disease process and its potential as a diagnostic tool.
