Chemical herbicides for Chinese herbal medicines

A mixture of 48% trifluralin and 50% acetochlor is ideal for pre-emergence weed control in Chinese herbal medicine fields. The 48% trifluralin formulation effectively controls one-year-old grass weeds, such as crabgrass and goosegrass, and also manages small-seeded broadleaf weeds. For application, mix 80-100 ml of 48% trifluralin with 40-50 kg of water per acre, and spray evenly before sowing. After spraying, till the soil to a depth of 5-7 cm to ensure proper incorporation. Meanwhile, 50% acetochlor emulsifiable concentrate works by inhibiting the growth of weed seedlings and root development. It is particularly effective against various annual grass weeds and can also suppress some small-seeded broadleaf weeds. Apply 70-75 ml of 50% acetochlor EC per acre mixed with 40-60 kg of water, either before sowing or 10-15 days prior to transplanting. Ensure even coverage on the topsoil for best results.

For post-emergence weed control, a combination of 20% glyphosate and 47% Roundup is suitable. This is especially useful after sowing when the medicinal plants have started to germinate. For example, Bupleurum and other similar herbs typically take 10-30 days to emerge. Apply 150-250 ml of 150-250 ml of 20% glyphosate in 25-30 kg of water, or 150-200 ml of 41% Roundup in 30-40 kg of water, targeting weeds that are visible but before the herbal plants start to grow. However, once the herbal crops have emerged, avoid using these herbicides to prevent damage to the young seedlings.

The 6% Kecaoxing EC and 8% Lazurin formulations are suitable for controlling weeds after the herbal plants have emerged. 6% Kecaoxing EC is effective against annual broadleaf weeds and has a significant effect on perennial weeds, making it ideal for crops like Coix seed, Ophiopogon japonicus, and Vicaster. Use 70-80 ml of 6% Kecaoxing EC per acre mixed with 30-40 kg of water, and apply it to weeds at a height of about 5 cm. On the other hand, 8% high-efficiency herbicide offers long-lasting control and a wide range of weed suppression. It is particularly effective against annual weeds like goosegrass, crabgrass, and green grass, as well as perennial weeds such as bermudagrass and Imperata rhizome. Suitable for broadleaf herbs like Radix, Pinellia ternata, Arctium, and Atractylodes. Typically, mix 25-30 ml of 8% herbicide with 20-30 kg of water per acre, and apply it using a fan nozzle during the 3-6 leaf stage of the weeds for optimal effectiveness.
