Chemical herbicides for Chinese herbal medicines

A mixture of 48% trifluralin and 50% acetochlor is ideal for pre-emergence weed control in Chinese herbal medicine fields. Trifluralin at 48% effectively targets one-year-old grass weeds such as crabgrass and goosegrass, while also controlling small-seeded broadleaf weeds. For seed-based Chinese medicinal plants, apply 80-100 ml of 48-50% trifluralin per acre mixed with 40-50 kg of water before sowing. After application, till the soil to a depth of 5-7 cm. On the other hand, 50% acetochlor emulsifiable concentrate primarily inhibits the growth of weed seedlings and roots. It's particularly effective against various annual grasses and can manage some small-seeded broadleaf weeds. Apply 70-75 ml of 50% acetochlor EC per acre mixed with 40-60 kg of water, either before sowing or 10-15 days prior to transplanting, ensuring even coverage on the soil surface.

For post-emergence weed control, 20% glyphosate and 47% Roundup are suitable options. These herbicides work best when applied before the emergence of Chinese medicinal plants like Bupleurum and Radix. Apply 150-250 ml of 20% glyphosate per 25-30 kg of water, or 150-200 ml of 41% Roundup per 30-40 kg of water, targeting weeds that have just emerged but before the medicinal plants start growing. However, once the medicinal plants have emerged, avoid using these products to prevent damage to the seedlings.

After the emergence of Chinese herbal crops, 6% Kecaoxing EC and 8% Lazurin are effective for targeted weed control. The 6% Kecaoxing EC is especially good at managing annual broadleaf weeds and has a significant effect on perennial weeds. It's suitable for use in crops like Coix seeds, Ophiopogon japonicus, and Vicaster. Mix 70-80 ml of 6% Kecaoxing EC with 30-40 kg of water per acre and spray when weeds are about 5 cm tall. The 8% high-efficiency herbicide offers long-lasting control and is effective against a wide range of weeds, including goosegrass, crabgrass, Bermuda grass, and Imperata rhizome. It’s ideal for broadleaf herbs such as Radix, Pinellia ternata, Arctium, and Atractylodes. Typically, mix 25-30 ml of 8% Lazurin with 20-30 kg of water per acre and apply using a fan nozzle during the 3-6 leaf stage of weeds for optimal results.
