Prevention and Control of Edible Mites

Edible fungus worms, also known as bacillary dysentery or fungal spiders, are pests that can severely damage various types of edible mushrooms. These pests typically infest the fungi during the early stages of inoculation. The hyphae from the inoculated block are often the first to be affected, and in many cases, mycelium germination is prevented. As the infestation progresses, the mushroom borer causes the mushroom buds to wither and die, leading to significant losses. The presence of these pests on the fruiting bodies of mushrooms results in discoloration, holes, or other visible damage, which greatly affects both the yield and quality of the harvest. These tiny pests are easily visible to the naked eye and can quickly cause extensive harm if not controlled. Therefore, timely prevention and treatment are essential during the cultivation and management of edible fungi. Approximately 7 days after inoculation, a colored film should be placed on the surface of the growing material for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, using a magnifying glass, inspect the area near the culture material. If small, flat, or oval-shaped, white or yellowish insects with fine hairs are observed, immediate action must be taken to eliminate them. 1. **Spray Treatment**: Use a solution of 50% omethoate diluted at 1000 times, or 1500 times dilution of chrysanthemum ester, or a 500 times concentration of Kete special spray to kill the pests. 2. **Rape Seed Cake Trapping**: Place several wet cloths on the damaged areas of the material and sprinkle freshly fried rape seed cake over them. When the pests gather on the cakes, remove the wet cloths and drown them with boiling water. 3. **Sweet and Sour Liquid Trap**: Mix 1 part acetic acid, 1 part water, and 0.1 part sugar. Add a few drops of dichlorvos to create a sweet and sour liquid. Soak a piece of Gauze or cotton in this mixture and place it on the surface of the material. When the pests gather, remove the cloth and kill them by heating. Repeat the process until no more pests are found. 4. **Fresh Bone Trap**: Place fresh pork bones on the bed where the pests are active. Once the pests gather on the bones, submerge them in water to kill the pests. Repeat this process several times until the material is free of damage. By implementing these methods, growers can effectively manage and control the spread of edible fungus worms, ensuring healthier and more productive mushroom crops. Regular monitoring and quick response are key to preventing serious infestations and maintaining high-quality yields.
