Growing vanilla flowers has become a popular trend in the world of gardening. In the United States, it's common for families to grow between 15 and 20 different types of herbs. In both urban and rural areas of China, more and more households are turning to herb cultivation as living environments improve. In Shanghai alone, there are over 80 varieties of herbs that are commonly grown by enthusiasts. More than 80 different types have been introduced to the public, and today we're excited to introduce one of them: sage.
Sage is a perennial herb from the Lamiaceae family, originally from southern Europe. It’s known for its drought resistance and preference for sunny locations. It thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline soil and can be grown in various settings—whether in garden beds, containers, or along borders. The plant has well-developed roots and grows to about 30 to 40 centimeters tall. Its leaves are opposite, gray-green, and covered with fine white hairs. The flowering spikes can reach up to 20 to 35 centimeters long, with multiple flowers arranged in sequence. The blossoms come in shades of light blue, pink, or lavender.
Sage typically begins to bloom in its second year. The flowers, stems, and leaves can all be used by steeping them in hot water, creating a fragrant infusion. This herbal tea is great for relaxation and can also be used in humidifiers or for refreshing baths. Sage pairs well with lavender leaves when making tea, and it’s often added to fried rice or soups for extra flavor. In the fall, the stems and leaves are harvested, dried, and ground into a powder, which can be used as a seasoning in cooking or in baked goods like cakes. Whether for culinary use or aromatherapy, sage is a versatile and valuable addition to any garden.
