Silkworm frass, also known as silkworm excrement, is a highly nutritious feed ingredient. It contains approximately 15.4% crude protein, which ranks just below bran and exceeds that of rice bran and grass. This makes it an excellent feed option for livestock and poultry, offering significant benefits when incorporated into their diets.
When fed to pigs, silkworm frass helps reduce the amount of fine feed required while promoting faster weight gain and improving slaughter rates. Additionally, sows that consume silkworm frass tend to produce more milk, supporting better growth in their piglets.
For sheep, feeding them with silkworm frass can increase milk production in goats and enhance wool yield. The quality of the sheep's fleece can improve, with some fibers reaching lengths of over 14 cm.
In cattle, silkworm frass contributes to improved resilience and overall health. For rabbits, it leads to greater fat accumulation and reduced water content, which can be beneficial in certain breeding or meat production scenarios.
When added to chicken feed at a rate of 5%, silkworm frass has a noticeable effect on egg yolk coloration, enhancing the visual appeal of the eggs. In aquaculture, silkworm frass can be used to feed fish, with one ton of frass capable of supporting the growth of about 100 kilograms of fresh fish. However, fish raised on silkworm frass tend to suffer from fewer diseases, making it a healthier alternative.
Despite its high nutritional value, fresh silkworm frass has a short shelf life and is prone to spoilage and mold if not properly stored. To extend its usability, it should be dried to maintain a moisture content below 15%. Alternatively, it can be preserved through silage using large drums, cement pits, or other suitable containers. The material must be tightly packed and compacted to encourage lactic acid fermentation, which helps prevent spoilage.
It is also important to note that silkworm frass may contain pathogens that affect silkworms. Therefore, it should be stored in a shaded, cool area away from direct sunlight, preferably in a silkworm greenhouse or similar environment, to ensure safety and quality when used as animal feed.
