It features small, compact growth with thick, fleshy rhizomes that grow in short segments. From these rhizomes, leaves and flowers emerge close to the soil surface, creating a dense and lush appearance. The leaves are oval-shaped, long-stalked, and have green petioles with distinctive reddish-brown spots. They typically measure around 4 cm in length, with dark reddish-brown foliage and irregular patches of green and white along the edges. The flowers are small, with pale white pollen that is not very noticeable. Despite its modest blooms, this plant is highly valued for its striking foliage, making it a popular choice for indoor decoration.
Tabby Begonia thrives in warm, humid, and partially shaded environments. It is sensitive to cold, high temperatures, and direct sunlight. The ideal temperature range for growth is between 15°C and 25°C. The soil should remain consistently moist but never waterlogged, as overwatering can lead to root rot. It’s important not to let the soil dry out completely before watering, as this can be fatal to the plant. To maintain high humidity, misting the leaves and surrounding area regularly is recommended. However, excessive moisture during hot summer months can also cause problems, so it's best to keep the plant in a cool, well-ventilated space during this time. In winter, place it in a bright, indirect light location and reduce watering. As long as the temperature stays above 10°C, it can survive the colder season comfortably.
During the growing season, feed the plant every 20 days with a diluted liquid fertilizer or a specialized foliage plant formula. Be careful not to let the fertilizer come into contact with the leaves, as this may cause unsightly scars. Repotting should be done annually in spring using a nutrient-rich, loose, and well-draining soil mix. A combination of leaf mold, peat, and sand or perlite works well, along with a small amount of decomposed chicken manure or cow dung as a base fertilizer. When repotting, remove any old soil and damaged roots, and place a layer of gravel or broken pottery at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Propagation of Tabby Begonia is best done during spring when repotting. Use rhizome division, cutting the rhizome into sections, each containing new shoots and at least two leaves. Allow the cut surfaces to dry slightly before planting them in pots. Plant the rhizome so that the top part is level with the soil surface.
