The West German long-haired rabbit, also known as the German Angora, is a renowned wool-producing breed that originated in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1978, the provincial foreign trade department imported 200 of these rabbits for the first time, introducing them to rural areas in Jiangyin County. This marked the beginning of their presence in China. By the early 1980s, both the agriculture and foreign trade departments were actively working to bring more of these rabbits into the country through various channels. In 1982, 1,000 West German long-haired rabbits were officially introduced, all of which were distributed to rural areas for pure breeding and crossbreeding programs to improve local rabbit populations.
In 1986, the Nanjing Jinling Rabbit Breeding Farm took another step by importing 200 high-quality West German long-haired rabbits from Germany for further breeding and promotion. These efforts helped establish the breed's presence across the region.
The West German long-haired rabbit is characterized by its pure white fur and larger size compared to other breeds. It has strong reproductive capabilities, with an average litter of around six young rabbits. The young grow quickly, and adult rabbits can weigh between 3 to 4 kilograms. One of the most notable features of this breed is its excellent wool production. The fur has a high density and a well-structured plexus, making it less prone to matting. The fibers have a natural wave, contributing to its superior quality. Adult rabbits are typically sheared every 90 days, yielding an average of 500 to 800 grams of wool annually, with some individuals producing over 1 kilogram.
Today, West German long-haired rabbits are widely distributed throughout the province, especially in Suzhou. By 1987, they and their hybrids accounted for approximately 80% of the total rabbit population, highlighting their popularity and success in local farming. Their combination of fast growth, high wool yield, and adaptability made them a valuable asset to Chinese rabbit breeding programs.
