West German longhair rabbit

The West German long-haired rabbit, also known as the German Angora, is a renowned wool-producing breed that originated in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1978, the provincial foreign trade department introduced 200 of these rabbits for the first time, bringing them to Jiangyin County, where they were distributed among rural areas. By the early 1980s, more efforts were made to bring in this breed through various channels. In 1982, a total of 1,000 West German long-haired rabbits were imported by the foreign trade department and released into rural areas for pure breeding and crossbreeding programs. In 1986, the Nanjing Jinling Rabbit Breeding Farm brought back 200 high-quality West German long-haired rabbits from Germany for further breeding and promotion. These rabbits are characterized by their pure white color and larger size. They have strong reproductive capabilities, with an average litter size of around six. Young rabbits grow quickly, and adult rabbits can weigh between 3 to 4 kilograms. Known for their excellent wool production, these rabbits have dense fur with a well-structured plexus that resists matting. Their fibers have a natural wave, making the quality of the wool very desirable. Adult rabbits are typically sheared every 90 days, yielding an average of 500 to 800 grams per year, with some individuals producing over 1 kilogram annually. Today, West German long-haired rabbits are widely distributed across the province, especially in Suzhou. By 1987, these rabbits and their hybrids made up approximately 80% of the total rabbit population in the region, highlighting their popularity and significance in local agriculture.
