The broodstock for quail breeding should be carefully selected. Female quails should have a body length of at least 35 cm, weigh between 50 to 150 grams, and show signs of a swollen belly with a clear zona pellucida, an inflamed vent, and the presence of eggs. Males should be over 55 cm in length, weigh more than 150 grams, display red streaks on their underbelly, and have a visible transparent fluid when their abdomen is gently pressed. Microscopic analysis can confirm the presence of sperm. It's recommended to pair 2 to 3 females with one male to ensure effective breeding.
To enhance breeding success, oxytocin or LRH-A (Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone Analog) can be used. A single injection of LRH-A is typically administered. Females receive 10 micrograms per 50 grams of body weight, while males are given 15 to 25 milligrams per tail. Males should be injected 24 hours before females. The injection depth should not exceed 0.5 cm, and the volume should not exceed 1 ml to avoid complications.
Artificial insemination involves holding the female quail by the front with a towel and pressing its abdomen backward. If the cloaca is blocked, it may need to be carefully cut open to extract the egg. The extracted egg is placed in a disinfected container. Selected males are euthanized, their testes removed, ground, and filtered through a 100-mesh sieve to collect the semen. The semen is then mixed into the egg container and stirred for five minutes. Any remaining blood or residue is washed away with saline solution. At least two males should be used for each batch of eggs to improve fertilization rates.
For incubation, maintain a water depth of about 10 cm, and change the water regularly. The temperature should not exceed 4°C. Higher temperatures reduce incubation time. Fry should be raised in concrete tanks, with a small amount of manure water added to promote the growth of silkworms. Water hyacinth or similar aquatic plants should be introduced to provide shelter. The stocking density should be around 200 fry per square meter. After one to two months, when the fry reach about 10 cm in length, they can be transferred to adult clam habitats for further development.
